Women In Construction Week 2021
Contract Manager
How long have you worked at Cell-Crete?
14 years this past January.
How did you get started in this industry and why did you choose construction?
I was 18 years old, and my father-in-law was working for a construction company in need of a receptionist and asked if I would be interested. I took the job on a temporary basis, until they could fill the position, I was there for three years and that is where I developed a love for the industry.
Why did you join Cell-Crete?
I was hoping to retire from my current position when I came on board with Cell-Crete I had just come from 3 different employers in the past 5 years where they had succumbed to the economy. I was looking for a company that was strong, had stability and a great reputation to set roots and grow, to retirement.
What is it like being in the construction industry as a woman?
Honestly, I have no Idea what it would be like to work in any other industry. I’ve not really thought of how this industry has influenced me as a woman other than at times, having to prove myself as knowledgeable in my position. Occasionally, I’ll encounter someone who will second guess my abilities and knowledge of the industry because I’m a woman. Usually, once the conversation is over, I will have proven myself knowledgeable and we’ll end our conversation with a mutual respect for one another.
How has Cell-Crete helped you succeed as a woman in construction?
Oh, this is a good question. I will say the most valuable lesson I’ve learned here is to Listen and always be prepared. I believe it is because of the development of these skills, that I’ve been successful. I owe these skills to Louis, Jr., thank you for your patience with me early on.
Have you had any role models or inspirations in the industry?
I don’t know about role models or inspirations but respect, we’ll I would have to say Louis Fisher, Jr. it has always been nothing but a pleasure to work for him. During industries good times and the bad, it has always been a comfort to know I work for a man who sees us all as a family. I’ve seen him make difficult decisions for our best interest at the risk of his own to take care of his staff and their families.
What has surprised you the most about being a woman in construction?
The changes in the industry happening today. I see so many opportunities for women in the Field, as Project Managers, Estimators, Superintendents, Foremen and Skilled Labor, that weren’t available before. It’s great to see the acceptance by the industry.
Are there any common myths or misconceptions about women working in construction that you’d like to address?
I believe men think we are here to make their lives miserable. We do understand the industry and when we ask for paperwork other than a simple handshake agreement it is not to complicate your life, It’s strictly to protect our interests and our ongoing business.
Why should construction companies hire more women?
It gives women the opportunity to make a living wage where they can afford to live life on their own terms, where historically, we did not have these opportunities. I know, early on, I didn’t.
What is a typical day like for you on the job?
I start my day with a tall cup of coffee! I check in with my team to see if there are any concerns and make sure everyone is doing well. I go through my emails as they come in throughout the day. I attend any meetings scheduled, Complete Labor Compliance Packets, review and execute DocuSign Contracts, review contracts, address any contract and Insurance and preliminary notice issues. I keep my team abreast and trained in bond rates, insurance, contracts, and labor compliance including all the changes in laws and nuances involved.
What do you enjoy most about working at Cell-Crete?
The staff. I believe we have a terrific team.
Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Cell-Crete?
Well, I’m in the Contracts Department, so for me the best project is one with very little paperwork! Unfortunately, that usually means low dollars. However, I do enjoy seeing those high dollar contracts, and again Unfortunately, that usually means a lot of paperwork! I cannot win for losing. I’ve learned to take the good with the bad.
Do you have any advice or tips for other women in this industry?
Listen first, repeat what you’ve heard, be prepared, and have courage, you are worth it.
Do you have any hobbies or interests?
My greatest joy in life are my Son, Daughter and Granddaughters, so I would say spending time with them, however, it’s not only about them, so then, it’s me time, Gardening, Day Trips, Shopping, Traveling and just relaxing.
