The Project

We’re thrilled to share the successful completion of our work on the South Kiln at Brickyard Landing, where we utilized cellular concrete to strengthen this historic structure.

Here’s How LCC Revived the South Kiln:

The primary goal was to ensure the South Kiln remained strong, and we achieved this by filling it with cellular concrete. This innovative material worked exceptionally well, providing stability without putting too much pressure on the kiln. Here’s a quick overview of what we did:

  1. Filling in Layers: We carefully added the cellular concrete in lifts of 2-3 feet at a time, which helped control the pressure on the structure.
  2. Sealing It Up: We sealed off any holes and gaps on the outside to prevent the concrete from escaping during the filling process.
  3. Flue Considerations: We accounted for some concrete flowing into the underfloor flues, ensuring everything stayed solid.
  4. Monitoring Progress: We closely monitored the existing masonry throughout the work. When necessary, we added extra support to ensure safety.
  5. Strengthening Connections: To help the masonry bond with the cellular concrete, the GC installed helical dowels from the outside, spaced every 3 feet for added strength.

Thanks to the effective use of cellular concrete, we successfully stabilized the South Kiln while honoring its historical significance. This project not only met our immediate needs but also helped preserve the unique character of Brickyard Landing for years to come.
