I-15 and Tropicana Avenue Interchange Project

The I-15 and Tropicana Avenue interchange project is a crucial enhancement for the Las Vegas Strip, featuring a sophisticated three-level tight diamond interchange and a new flyover connecting southbound I-15 to eastbound Tropicana Avenue. A standout element of this initiative is the innovative application of cellular concrete, which provides significant benefits in overcoming site challenges.

The design required a southbound I-15 ramp to be constructed over Dean Martin Drive, intersecting with the right-of-way of an existing concrete culvert. To manage the additional surcharge load from the new ramp and prevent damage to the culvert, a lightweight fill was necessary. This led to the selection of Class II cellular concrete, which is currently being cast between precast panel walls. This choice reflects the project team’s commitment to leveraging the Design-Build (D/B) approach to devise creative solutions for complex issues.

Cellular concrete’s lightweight nature substantially reduces the need for extensive trucking, making it particularly advantageous given the live traffic surrounding the ramp. Its ease of placement further streamlines the construction process, facilitating quicker installation while ensuring safety for both workers and motorists.

The project will utilize approximately 11,000 cubic yards of this material, highlighting its essential role in enabling the ramp’s construction without the complications typically associated with heavier materials. By incorporating cellular concrete, the project not only effectively addresses immediate construction challenges but also lays the groundwork for enhanced traffic flow and future growth at this vital interchange, aligning with the dynamic needs of the Las Vegas Valley.
