Groundwater Replenishment System Plant 2 Secondary Effluent Pipeline Rehab Project

PROJECT LOCATION

Huntington Beach, CA

COMPLETION DATE

2021

The Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) is a collaboration between the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) and the Orange County Water District (OCWD). It is the world’s largest water purification system for indirect potable reuse. The system takes highly treated wastewater from OCSD that would have otherwise discharged into the ocean and purifies it using a three-step advanced treatment process. The result is high quality water that meets or exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards. Rehabilitation of a 3.5-mile pipeline will bring treated wastewater from Huntington Beach to Fountain Valley. The existing pipe is severely damaged, and the rehabilitation will stabilize the pipe to prevent further corrosion down the road.

The Solution

Lightweight Cellular Concrete (LCC) is being installed within the annular space of a 66” existing groundwater pipe slip-lined with 60” fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar (FRP) and steel pipe of over 15,000 LF. Grout work is being performed with man-entry approach. The slip-lining rehabilitation method has less construction impacts than constructing a new pipeline and the location allows construction to stay out of the public right-of-way.
