Innovative Approach to Overcoming Earthwork Challenges in the Data Center Construction

The construction of a new data center for in Kuna, ID posed unique earthwork challenges, primarily due to the abundance of rocks on the site. These rocks necessitated the use of blasting techniques, and the project required the utilization of all available heavy equipment for daily earthwork operations. However, a design change related to the installation of IWW, sewer, and manholes had the potential to significantly impact both cost and schedule, as it would require the removal of existing pipes and manholes.

To address this challenge, Ralph L. Wadsworth proposed a cost-effective and efficient solution by utilizing Class II LCC (Lightweight Cellular Concrete). By leveraging their mobile batch plant, the team was able to mix and pump flowable lightweight fill directly on-site. This allowed for the abandonment of each pipe length from the manholes, followed by the abandonment of the manholes themselves, all using the same mix.\

The project team submitted a pour plan that employed slicklines and vents for the pipes, while employing typical LCC fill methods for the manholes. This pour plan minimized schedule impacts and received approval as a safe and high-quality solution capable of filling any voids. By adopting the use of LCC, the contractor successfully eliminated the need for excavating the pipes and manholes. This approach not only bypassed the lengthy process of developing a comprehensive safety plan but also reduced crew and equipment hours, minimized material lead times, eliminated the need for repetitive backfill and compaction activities, and mitigated additional costs and schedule impacts beyond the initial installation expenses.

Overall, this innovative approach to earthwork challenges in the construction of the data center showcases the effectiveness of using Lightweight Cellular Concrete, offering significant time and cost savings while ensuring the delivery of a safe and high-quality end product.
