About The Bangerter Three Interchanges, Pipe Abandonment Project

PROJECT LOCATION

Salt Lake County, UT

COMPLETION DATE

2021

The client needed our help changing the traffic pattern at an intersection by creating an overpass. By increasing the material over the pipeline, the loads on top of the old pipeline would be increasing. The old pipeline is a 78-inch diameter, and it is a 40-plus-year old aqueduct line that cannot be left in place under newly constructed walls and a highway bridge. Therefore, we used MSE panels to create a ramp/grade separation for the overpass.

The Solution

Clyde/RLW team along with UDOT project management evaluated options of either removal or abandonment of the pipe.  The Clyde/RLW team elected the abandonment option as the most feasible and economical option.

Our scope was pipe abandonment using LCC to address these loads on an abandoned pipeline. We filled over 2,000 liner feet of an aquaduct on Bangerter Highway with LCC (Lightweight Cellular Concrete).
