Lancaster, CA
The Avenue J Interchange project at California State Route 14 is designed to enhance access and safety for the growing traffic demands in the area. This important infrastructure initiative is funded through a partnership between Caltrans, the City of Lancaster, and LA Metro.
Once completed, the new northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp to SR 14 will create an additional access route to the highway. This enhancement aims to alleviate congestion on SR 14 and improve overall traffic flow for users of Avenue J.
To combat the challenges posed by the area’s soft soil conditions and to prevent differential settlement, lightweight cellular concrete will be engineered as a backfill material. This will be used behind the cast-in-place retaining walls and for the benched subgrade as part of the SR 14 lane widening. Approximately 21,000 cubic yards (Cy) of Class III lightweight cellular concrete will be used across three retaining walls.
The strategic use of lightweight cellular concrete not only ensures the structural stability of the retaining walls but also contributes to the long-term success of the interchange improvements. The Avenue J Interchange project underscores a commitment to developing effective transportation solutions while addressing the unique engineering challenges presented by the site.
