The primary steel members in the photo required a fire rating. Some steel members to be exposed to the elements, and the remaining to be enclosed within a ceiling. Intumescent paint was used for the exposed steel and conventional low-density material used for the non-exposed steel members.
Applying intumescent paint to the exposed steel meets the rating requirements, protection from the elements, and gives a presentable look to allow the customer to incorporate these steel members with their design.
Where the conventional and intumescent meet, per code and manufacturer’s recommendations, the intumescent paint must overlap the conventional fireproofing material. In the case of a fire, this method prevents the intumescent paint from delamination, and secures the rating for the steel.
