The Project

The Grand Staircase at Eastern Oregon University, a historical architectural gem completed in 1929, is undergoing reconstruction to restore its connections between the university and the community. A key component of this rebuilding process involves the use of class II cellular concrete, which offers significant advantages for this project.

Cellular concrete is particularly beneficial for applications requiring structural backfill in challenging conditions, such as tight spaces and complex shapes. In the case of the Grand Staircase, the need for a flowable fill became essential to maintain the project’s timeline and budget. The lightweight nature of cellular concrete allows for easier handling and placement, making it ideal for filling behind cast-in-place walls and beneath the staircase steps.

Approximately 1200 cubic yards of this innovative material will be utilized, ensuring a solid foundation while minimizing the load on the existing structures. The use of cellular concrete not only enhances the structural integrity of the staircase but also facilitates efficient construction processes. As the project continues, this modern solution will help preserve the staircase’s historical significance while ensuring it remains a vital link for future generations to enjoy the beauty of this architectural treasure.
