Mabton, WA

The Project

SR 241 Mabton Vicinity Retrofit Bridges – will replace and repair two bridges on State Route 241 in the Mabton Washington area. These bridges, which were built in the 1950s and 1960s, are over half-a-century old and require improvements and currently have weight restrictions. One notable aspect of the project is the use of cellular concrete. Due to the soft soils in the proximity of the river and the potential for differential settlement to the bridge, Class II and IV cellular concrete was chosen for the construction. Welded wire baskets were utilized to contain the cellular concrete in lifts and construct the embankments for the bridge. Over 3,000 cubic yards of cellular concrete were placed in the project, and the placement process took just over 2 weeks to complete. Despite the challenge of the project’s remote location, with supply issues necessitating the transportation of cement from Seattle, which is 3 hours away, the project is expected to be successfully completed in 2025. The use of cellular concrete will contribute to the removal of weight restrictions and the restoration of the structural integrity of the Mabton bridges, ensuring their long-term service to the community.
