The Project

Introducing the Waterfront Seattle project, focused on the revitalization of Alaskan Way and the creation of a new street called Elliott Way. This ambitious endeavor spans 17 blocks, from Pioneer Square to Belltown, with the aim of improving accessibility and connectivity in the area.

The reconstruction of Alaskan Way, between S King and Pike streets, has been a key aspect of the project. With careful attention to pedestrian needs, intersections and sidewalks have been thoughtfully designed to ensure ease of access. Along the west side of Alaskan Way, a new park promenade and two-way protected bike path have been created, further enhancing the pedestrian experience.

An exciting addition to the project is the newly constructed Elliott Way, which opened in spring 2023. This street serves as a vital connection between the waterfront and Belltown, providing improved accessibility for both motorists and pedestrians. With two vehicle lanes in each direction, as well as dedicated sidewalks and protected bike lanes, Elliott Way offers a safe and efficient route for all users.

During the construction of an offramp in the right-of-way (ROW), a lightweight backfill solution was required to protect the underground utilities from potential damage. To address this, cellular concrete is being utilized between RW 1 and RW 2, using precast full-height panels. This innovative approach ensures the preservation and safety of the buried utilities while facilitating the creation of a new offramp connection between Elliott Way and Pine Street. This connection will greatly improve waterfront access for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike.

Impressively, over 3,000 cubic yards of cellular concrete material, including Class II and Class IV material, are being employed for this specific part of the project. This demonstrates the project’s commitment to utilizing advanced materials and techniques to achieve its goals.

The Waterfront Seattle project is a testament to the dedication to enhancing urban infrastructure and creating vibrant spaces for the community. Stay tuned for further updates and developments as this exciting initiative continues to transform the waterfront and improve connectivity in the area.
